Range of separators to meet your needs

Whether you are working with high pressure, low solids loading or another complication, turn to KCSS, KD and KS Series DeSanders for your solution.

How they work

DeSanders, also known as separators, work similarly to cyclones.

Fluid with suspended sand or grit feeds into the unit. Our entry design creates a vortex action for the slurry. As the liquid spirals inward, extremely high centrifugal forces move the sand outward, toward the cylinder wall. All desanding units have an internal cone section that accelerates the rotational velocity of the water to produce higher centrifugal forces. As the diameter of the cone gets smaller, the acceleration increases which results in a finer separation and removes more solids. Sand particles progress in a spiral path toward the apex (bottom) of the cone, where they discharge into an accumulator tank that collects the solids. The liquid exits the separator from the overflow at the top.

Our DeSanders are simple to operate because they have no moving parts. They provide efficient separation with relatively low power consumption.

KREBS® DeSander KCSS Series

Our KREBS® Centrifugal Sand Separator (KCSS) DeSanders are commonly used in industrial and automotive separation operations.

They have a feed entry that pre-classifies sand before it enters the cylindrical section. This causes the sand particles to enter the cylinder with a very smooth flow pattern along the wall. It also minimises turbulence and ricocheting solids particles that occur in conventionally fed cyclones. Because the energy is converted to centrifugal force, the accumulator tank and internal surfaces of the unit experience very little wear.

KREBS® DeSander KD and KS Series

Our KREBS® DeSander (KD) and KREBS® Separator (KS) DeSanders are used to treat water in industrial and water treatment applications. They are most commonly used to process potable water. KD DeSanders offer a particularly low cost way to handle a wide range of flow rates.

Customised designs

We design your DeSander to meet your specific requirements. KCSS and KD/KS DeSanders are ideal for:
  • Potable water treatment

  • Cooling tower water treatment

  • Wine and juice degritting

  • Food processing

  • Industrial applications

Uncomplicated and long-lasting solutions

Simple and effective separation

Our DeSanders are compact, reducing capital and installations costs. They are simple to operate, with no moving parts. And they provide efficient separation with relatively low power consumption.

Wear resistant

Depending on your application, we offer units that are unlined, lined with vulcanised gum rubber or lined with replaceable gum rubber liners. We recommend units with replaceable liners in abrasive applications. For non-abrasive applications, we recommend units with vulcanised lining or no lining at all.

Versatile and customisable

All of our desanding units may be mounted horizontally, vertically or at an angle in between. They are available in different sizes with different internal fittings to fully optimise your performance. Using computer simulation, we are able to accurately predict your DeSander’s performance to determine the ideal DeSander units for your application and eliminate the need for onsite testing.

DeSander cyclones purpose built for your application

With an almost endless array of customised options, you can be confident that the DeSander you select is ideal for the job.

Size and performance

Our KCSS, KD and KS DeSanders come in a wide range of sizes, from 51–1270 mm (2–50 in) in diameter, as measured at the cylinder section. Different internal fittings optimise your unit’s performance for your unique application. All models are flanged for inspection and wear parts replacement.

Mounting

Our DeSander units can mount and operate efficiently at any angle, including fully horizontal or vertical positions. The horizontal units are relatively low to the ground and easy to conceal, a popular option for residential neighborhoods.

Piping and connections

The water outlet may be positioned either at the centre of the top of the unit or tangentially. We also design units for clockwise or counterclockwise rotation to make installation easy regardless of your piping configuration.

Materials of construction and lining

We use carbon steel as our standard material of construction. But our DeSanders may be built to any specification and from any alloy to meet your requirements, including units built to ASME code section VIII, division I specifications. We offer our units unlined, lined with vulcanized gum rubber or lined with replaceable gum rubber or ceramic. Regardless of your application, budget constraints and preferences for wear life, we have you covered.

Features and specifications

  • The KD Series has a tangential feed entry design that increases centrifugal force, for enhanced separation.
  •  We offer an inexpensive welded, one-piece unit as part of our KS series.
  • The KCSS Series has an involute feed entry.
  • The cone section maintains the centrifugal force of the liquid as it moves down the DeSander, resulting in significantly finer separation and greater solids recovery, compared to designs without a cone section.
  • Our standard cone section is fabricated out of long-lasting abrasion resistant (AR) plate or rubber-lined steel. A variety of other alloys are available as needed.
  • We fabricate the cone section of long-lasting AR plate or rubber-lined steel as standard. A variety of alloys are available as an option.
  • All units are available to fit any type of process connection.
  • We can certify units to ASME pressure-vessel code, or other standards as required.
  • The KREBS® automatic solids discharge system, consisting of an actuated valve and timer system, is available for all DeSanders.
