Low maintenance, high durability Vertical Incinerator

Traditionally, calcinating raw materials comes at a steep price. The energy demands inherent in the calcination process eat into your profits. At the same time, calcination releases large amounts of waste heat and harmful CO emissions, increasing your operation’s carbon footprint. However, what if the CO, unburnt hydrocarbons and excess heat could be put to beneficial use? This is the idea behind out advanced Vertical Incinerator solutions.

Using an innovative process, our Vertical Incinerator solutions trap excess heat before it can be lost as exhaust. That heat is then put back into the machine. In this process, Ambient air is tangentially injected along the height of the vertical incinerator, mixing with the tangentially injected rotary kiln exhaust gases. The oxygen in the air oxidises carbon monoxide, unburnt hydrocarbons and the carbon in the solid particulate matter in the kiln exhaust gases, producing additional energy for use in a downstream Waste Heat Boiler. And, as an added bonus, it reduces CO and hydrocarbon emissions.

Our Vertical Incinerator is usually coupled to a rotary kiln which produces calcined petroleum coke (CPC) from green petroleum coke (GPC). Additionally, it may be coupled to any pyro-processing system that produces exhaust gases high in CO, unburned hydrocarbons and/or combustible particulate matter.

And the Vertical Incinerator is designed to protect more than just your profits and the environment; it is fully sealed to prevent the escape of harmful dust and gases that could negatively affect your workforce. Add to that the water cooled solids discharge gates and stand-off personnel protective heat shields at all personnel access locations, and you have an incinerator that is designed as much for safety as for effectiveness.

Finally, our Vertical Incinerators are built to last without the need for excessive maintenance; checking the packing glands on the solids discharge gates is the only required normal maintenance. This means a longer service life in addition to improved efficiency.

Durable, efficient Vertical Incinerators for effective calcination

Energy efficiency
The Vertical Incinerator recovers heat from unburned CO, hydrocarbons and solid carbon present in the rotary kiln gases by oxidizing these components. This increases the heat content of the gas stream for use in the downstream waste heat steam recovery boiler.
Reduced emissions
By cycling gaseous emissions back into the Vertical Incinerator, the machine reduces unwanted emissions of CO and unburnt hydrocarbons in the kiln exhaust gases. And, our Vertical Incinerator solutions produce approximately half of the footprint of a horizontal incinerator.
Maximum steam production

Vertical Incinerator: Optimise your plant’s energy efficiency

Our Vertical Incinerator is built for durability, safety and effectiveness, and includes the following features:

  • Based on FLSmidth’s flash calciner technology.
  • Heavy duty shell and supports for long service life.
  • Tangentially induced cyclonic inlet opening for the kiln exhaust gases, which effects both mixing of the injected ambient air and collection/drop-out of oversized carbonaceous particulate matter.
  • Vertical combustion air header pipe with injection nozzles for uniformly injecting ambient air along the height of the incinerator to effect mixing with the tangentially induced kiln exhaust gases and subsequent oxidation of remaining gaseous and solid fuels.
  • Bottom collection / discharge dropout cone for oversized unburnt solids, which are returned as feed to the rotary kiln.
  • A two-component insulated refractory lining for protection of the shell and retainment of heat for increased production of steam.
  • A built-in hot draft exhaust stack, which can be used for bypassing the downstream waste heat boiler, if required.
  • Vertical flow of the exhaust gases and the increased mixing of the exhaust gas and ambient air enhances the separation and collection of oversized particulate matter, with the material being returned to the kiln as feed. The enhanced mixing of the gas streams improves the combustion of the unburned gas and solid compounds.

Additionally, this Vertical Incinerator is backed by extensive FLSmidth process design expertise. We’ll help you properly size your incinerator for optimum performance and allow it to interface properly with upstream and downstream systems.
