With growing IoT connections and connected asset applications in the world today, it is crucial to secure the connected assets from cyber risks and vulnerabilities through threat mitigations and stay in compliance with the highest possible cyber security standards. This is equally important in the cement and mining industries.

Digitalization is not new to FLSmidth. Almost 50 years ago the first automated quality control was introduced and since more than 9.000 FLSmidth assets has been connected doing more than 300 million measurements every day. This data represents a huge value to the customer, both in terms of productivity, lifecycle services and support, reduced unplanned downtime through asset health solutions and increasing the throughput, recovery & efficiency with optimization solutions.

In these solutions IT security is key to success.

“Our customers in the mining and cement industries are focused on productivity, stability, throughput – and on eliminating down time. Digital solutions can give them all of that. But for these digital solutions to be an asset and not a liability, third party standards and certifications are needed. Getting the ISA/IEC 62443 standard shows me, that our IIoT platform is implemented effectively with the best practice cyber security,” says Mikko Tepponen, Chief Digital Officer at FLSmidth.

Mikko Tepponen, Chief Digital Officer, FLSmidth (2nd from right) receiving IEC-62443-4-1 Compliance certificate from Klaus Ahrensbach, Senior Sales Executive, Bureau Veritas Denmark along with Michael Hanschell, Head of Cyber Security (1st from right), and Manikandan Rajendran, Product Manager of IoT platform and Insights, Flsmidth.

Facts:  What is ISA / IEC 62443?

The ISA/IEC 62443 standard define requirements and processes for implementing and maintaining electronically secure industrial automation and control systems (IACS). These standards set best practices for security and provide a way to assess the level of security performance. The ISA/IEC standards set cybersecurity benchmarks in all industry sectors that use IACS, including building automation, electric power generation and distribution, transportation, and process industries such as chemicals and oil and gas.
