Newly appointed Ben Murphy sees golden opportunities at FLSmidth
FLSmidth has appointed Ben Murphy as Industry Director and Group Key Account Manager for gold. Murphy will drive business activities and further strengthen customer relationships in the gold industry at a key time for the organisation.
Murphy brings 20 years of experience in the mining industry to FLSmidth, having worked across diverse areas such as sales (capital and service), equipment selection product design and mine site troubleshooting. His early career was spent working on sites around the globe in various technical and managerial roles at companies such as Rio Tinto and Anglo American. Murphy’s most recent experience comes from Outotec where he was focused on flotation technology. Prior to that he was involved with gold gravity separation and leaching technologies at Gekko Systems.
“We are soon at the pilot phase for a massive industry gamechanger, Rapid Oxidative Leach (ROL). This process has the potential to unlock the value of low-grade refractory gold deposits where the economics of existing technologies just aren’t viable. In addition, we have strengthened our in-house gold processing expertise through the purchase of the hydrometallurgical and mineral processing capabilities of AuTec from Barrick Gold Corp. Our customers can now avail of hydrometallurgical testing and mineral processing resources capabilities, including batch and continuous pilot pressure oxidation, leaching and downstream flowsheet – the cornerstones for refractory gold ore process design. In short, we offer customers an unrivalled laboratory capability in gold.”
Looking at the bigger gold industry picture and current customer challenges, Murphy continues: “The mining industry is facing many difficulties, including unprecedented social pressure to make operations more sustainable and to engage meaningfully with the needs of local communities. FLSmidth are an organisation leading this kind of change and helping miners reduce their footprint through our expertise in areas such as dry stack tailings, for instance.
