Pneumatic Conveying

Ash Gathering Systems

Continuous fly ash removal system - All hoppers empty, all of the time.

  • A2P™ - Airslide to Pump System
  • Vacuum, Pressure and Vacuum/Pressure Systems

Features

This system stores no ash in the precipitator’s collection hopper as traditional ash systems do. As soon as the ash falls into the collection hoppers, it is funneled into the Airslide™ network that slopes on a slight angle toward a Fuller-Kinyon™ pump. All of the hoppers feed the Airslide network continuously and simultaneously for nonstop ash removal. The ash residence time from precipitator to storage silo is only a few seconds.

Schematic of the A2P System

  • Continuous ash removal from all collection hoppers
  • Continuous conveying to storage
  • Only two moving parts between collection hopper and storage
  • Virtually maintenance-free
  • Reduces fly ash system capital cost up to 50% on a greenfield project

Two proven ash handling technologies incorporated into the A2P system:
Airslide™ gravity conveyors, developed by Fuller Company in 1947, are utilized as the fly ash gathering system which continuously and simultaneously removes ash from all of the precipitator or bag house collection hoppers.

The Airslide conveyor has no moving parts within the ash flow stream and conveys fluidized ash via gravity through a fabricated sloped trough. The trough is separated by a proprietary porous membrane in which ash is conveyed atop of the membrane as low pressure air is supplied below the membrane from a fan or blower package. The low pressure air permeates through the membrane entraining the ash with air, eliminating friction between each ash particle and the fabric membrane. Ash will then glide across the membrane in the direction of the sloped trough.

The Fuller-Kinyon pump is utilized as the mechanical line charging device which injects the fly ash into the pressurized conveying pipe. It acts as an airlock between the conditions in the low pressure Airslide network and the higher pressure conveying pipe. The Fuller-Kinyon pump employs a variable pitched screw which continuously compresses the ash to form a material seal or airlock.

The rotating screw advances the ash into the pump’s conveying chamber, then into the convey line. A PD blower or compressor package will deliver the required motive air to pneumatically convey the fly ash via pipeline from the Fuller-Kinyon pump discharge to the system’s destination silo.

FLSmidth is committed to developing material handling systems technologies which offer our customers lower operating, maintenance and initial capital investment costs while maintaining design integrity and a high degree of of operational reliability.

Combination Vacuum / Pressure Systems

Utilizing the best attributes of vacuum and pressure systems, the combination systems offer higher conveying capacities over long distances, while requiring reduced headroom at the collection hoppers.

Pressure Systems

Pressure systems offer high-capacity fly ash transport over long conveying distances. Pressure vessels required at each collection hopper are furnished with rugged valving with hardened seats and discs, internal aeration to provide positive ash flow, and air flow control from the clean side of the vessel to provide uniform, controlled ash flow to the conveying line. Operating at pressures up to 35 PSIG, pressure systems can satisfy conveying capacities over 100 TPH.

Vacuum Systems

Vacuum systems offer a low-cost alternative for low-capacity fly ash transport over short conveying distances. Operating at vacuums up to 20 inches HG, the system features simplified controls, low headroom and a single swing-disc type ash intake valve at each collection hopper.
