Boosting material handling efficiency

Tutupan is Indonesia’s largest single coal mining operation

PT Adaro Energy, one of Indonesia’s leading thermal coal producers, has chosen an FLSmidth® overburden handling solution to assist with overburden removal at its Tutupan open pit mine. The project is part of the continuous expansion of Adaro’s mining operations, and is Adaro’s first venture into mechanised mining systems.

NEW ORDER

Major producer of environmental solid coal
Located in the vicinity of Tanjung, South Kalimantan, Tutupan is Indonesia’s largest single coal mining operation. The operation produces a low ash, low sulphur, low NOx thermal coal, which is marketed as ‘Envirocoal’ throughout the world.

Adaro has increased its production every year since 1992. It is now among the top five exporters of thermal coal in the world – all from one site.

Removal of overburden is a major operational challenge. The current operation moves up to 1 million bank cubic metres (Mbcm) per day, with plans to increase this in the future. The proposed system, at a rated capacity  of 12,000 tph, will account for some 10 percent of total overburden production. Adaro’s long-term strategy is to increase the amount of overburden moved by mechanised systems to 40% of total or higher.

Saving oil and increasing efficiency
FLSmidth has contracted with PT Adaro Indonesia, a subsidiary of PT Adaro Energy Tbk., to supply:

  • RAHCO® overland conveyors: 4 each – total length 10 km – 12,000 tph
  • RAHCO® mobile stacking conveyor:  1 each – 411 m – 12,000 tph
  • RAHCO® spreading conveyor: 1 each – 50 m boom – 12,500 tph
  • ABON® sizers: 2 each ABON 13/300CCTD with two 335 kW drives – 6,000 tph
  • FLSmidth® apron feeders: 2 each  – 6,000 tph

This system incorporates the dumping of overburden hauled by trucks into crushers at the pit perimeter, and conveying the overburden to a disposal area some 6 km distant. This will significantly reduce the overburden haulage requirements at the mine, saving manpower and fuel, and reducing truck fleet size. According to Mr Garibaldi Boy Thorir, President Director of PT Adaro Energy, the Out of Pit Crusher and Conveyor (OPCC) project will boost the efficiency by which the large amount of overburden is transported and help secure Adaro’s unbroken track record of continuous growth.

The contract with FLSmidth covers the complete solution from design and engineering to manufacture, site construction and commissioning. On signing the contract, FLSmidth Group CEO, Mr Jørgen Huno Rasmussen, commented: “This  material handling contract is the first of  its kind in Indonesia and will serve as a catalyst for other projects in the nation’s expanding mining sector.”
