Coal mill gas analysis also takes part in ensuring an uninterrupted operation of the kiln and calciner operation. By working with FLSmidth, the process of producing clinker is guaranteed in the most safe and cost effective manner taking care of all the involved equipment participating in the process.
Experience has shown that any coal mill department will experience beginning self ignition in the coal in storage silos or in the coal processing equipment which call for direct action. Thus, to operate a coal mill department safely measurements at various locations are required. Typical measuring points are silo, filter, mill and transporters.
Benefits
Gas analysers may be installed at various points in a coal mill department to monitor the development of Carbon Monoxide (CO) and in this way allow for intervention against a dangerous development of self ignition in the coal. In coal silos, coal mills and bag filters not in operation injection of CO2 can prevent the continuous development of CO and can thus prevent the coal from self igniting. Furthermore, as inert operation of coal mills is a part of optimising the mill performance, analysis of the oxygen level is required in order to operate the mill within operating range. As a consequence, the equipment is mandatory due to safety concerns and legislative demands.
As stated, the main objective achieved by coal mill department gas analysis is safety. To achieve this, the analyser must provide consistent, comparable and accurate data of the status of the coal mill department. As self ignition does not develop rapidly, continuous gas analysis is not a requirement. This allows several points to share the same gas analysis system trough a scanning sequence of all the sample points. Only the inert operation of a mill needs on-line continuous analysis.
