HM Design & Performance

Krebs Heavy Media cyclones are designed specifically to clean coal and minerals. A gravimetric separation takes place due to the buoyancy effect of the media forcing the lighter solids to the center of the cyclone where they are transported upward and through the vortex finder. The dense mineral matter spirals toward the apex and exits through that orifice.

  • Media density primarily determines separating gravity.
  • 1" to 1.5" ceramic lining is critical since dense mineral matter can be very abrasive.
  • Pressure should be kept low to mitigate classification of magnetite particles.
  • Heavy Media Cyclones are usually operated in a near-horizontal orientation allowing for large apex sizes to be used for refuse removal.
  • Cyclones 30" diameter and larger utilize a patented ceramic "acceleration wedge" to adjust capacity and G-forces.

Krebs Products for Coal Processing

Extremely efficient separating device using finely ground (-325 mesh) magnetite and water as the "media".

FLSmidth KREBS large diameter Heavy Media Cyclones, larger tops size can be efficiently cleaned at higher feed rates within a coal preparation plant.

  • Broad size range
  • Capacities from 58 STPH to 1000 STPH
  • A relatively wide range of coal sizes can be cleaned in a wide range of cyclone sizes
  • Several ceramic lining options from 1" to 1.5" thickness are available to optimize wear life
  • Our 30, 40, 44, 48 and 55 diameter models utilize a patented ceramic acceleration wedge.
  • Insert a smaller wedge, more capacity is immediately obtained.
  • Insert a large wedge, when higher G-forces are created to clean fine coal more efficiently.
