FLSmidth Wuppertal - Sample Processing Technology
FLSmidth Wuppertal - Sample Processing Technology

FLSmidth's Sample Processing Technology (formerly Pfaff aqs) unit designs and manufactures a wide range of products for every stage of the sample processing chain in cement and other minerals sectors.

Located in FLSmidth Wuppertal GmbH, Germany.

From tube transport to fully automated quality control systems

For more than 40 years, our success has been based on a very traditional means of transport: pneumatic post. Over the years we have continued the development of the pneumatic post to create fully automated high-tech systems. Material samples taken in the cement, steel, mineral and chemical industries go through the full sequence of processes - from sampling, through transport, unpacking, automatic sample preparation and analysis. Continuously perfecting sample analysis through the innovative systems always guarantees the highest quality.

1970: The founding of FLSmidth Wuppertal
Pfaff aqs GmbH was founded back in 1970. The company's business aim is to develop and manufacture highly specialized pneumatic post sample transport systems for the international cement and metal industries. The founders and leading engineers now bring a total of 35 years of experience to the new company.

1981: First laboratory automation in China
The installation of the first complete pfaff-automatic laboratory at the cement works in Jidong, Hebei province, China. This comprised the following components: taking samples of the raw meal with a airslide sampler, mixer, proportioning, automatic sending station, pneumatic post equipment and automated receiving station, sample proportioning, mill, press, linkage to XRF spectrometer.

1987: First laboratory automation in the metals sector
Installation of the first pfaff automated laboratory in the metals industry at Georg Fischer Automotive in Mettmann, Germany. This comprised the following components: pneumatic post system with four manual sending stations in the works and four automatic receiving stations in the laboratory, feed to two sample preparation units, sample labelling, automatic feed to two OE analysers, PALOS-PC plant monitoring system on PC-basis.

1988: First automatic slag preparation unit
Installation of the first automatic slag preparation unit with automatic feed to the ARL spectrometer for Saarstahl AG, Germany. Combined machine with crusher, mill, pelleting press, robot sample handling.

2001: Sale of pfaff aqs to FLSmidth
Until 2001, pfaff aqs GmbH was an independent, privately owned company. The challenges of the global market, however, call for new structures. To ensure the future of the company and its workers, its owners decided to sell to the leading international FLSmidth based in Denmark.
