F.L.Smidth Airtech – a member of the F.L.Smidth Group – has signed a contract to supply two flue gas cleaning installations at a total value of EUR 26m or nearly DKK 200m. The contract was awarded by the City of Amsterdam via its waste incineration company, Afval Energie Bedrijf (AEB).

The two complete flue gas cleaning installations covered by the contract will include electrostatic precipitators, bag filters and scrubbers. They are dimensioned to handle the flue gases from the incineration of 530,000 tonnes of waste per year. Deliveries of equipment are expected to take place from the summer of 2004, and the plants are planned to come onstream in the spring of 2006.

F.L.Smidth Airtech’s contract is part of a project to establish two new incineration lines at AEB’s existing facility in Amsterdam. Having installed the two new incineration lines, AEB will operate the world’s most efficient facility in terms of power generation and environmental protection. The facility is capable of treating 66 tonnes of waste per hour, or 530,000 tonnes per year. This is the first time the F.L.Smidth Group signs a contract with AEB, but it has previously supplied similar plants to the European waste incineration industry.

F.L.Smidth Airtech considers this is a strategically significant order due to an EU directive that will ban dumping of combustible waste at landfill sites from 2005. The market for waste incineration equipment, including high-efficiency flue gas cleaning systems, is therefore likely to grow.

The order will not affect the previously announced 2003 earnings prospects for the FLS Group, but will contribute positively to earnings for 2004 and 2005.
